Teaching – Feelin’ good on a Wednesday.

Firstly – has anyone seen the South Park episode with the song about Lorde? My boyfriend finds it absolutely hysterical and as he repeats it every few minutes, it’s been stuck in my head for absolutely days. Especially now that it’s Wednesday.

Ya ya ya, I am Lorde (Youtube link here)

Anyway, now that I’ve got that out of my system I thought I’d update you guys once again.

still haven’t heard back from any of my interviews and it’s driving me absolutely insane! I’m going out of my mind not knowing their decisions and can only hope for the best. Of course, I don’t want to leave my boyfriend behind, but at the same time I am so desperate for a change of scenery, a bit of excitement, some adventure.

Today I took on an extra options class at work, which was focused on ‘reading’ at an Upper Intermediate level. Jeez, these guys were good! I love reading, as you may have guessed, but it’s not exactly an easy skill to teach – is it? Thankfully they were a great class and hopefully they got something out of the lesson.

I am absolutely shattered. My brain is shutting down but with some smashed avo on toast and a cup of tea, I’m powering on. I’ve taken on an extra three hours of work tomorrow so I absolutely cannot let the students or my colleague down.

I asked my Intermediate class to write a poem for their homework, after teaching them about onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme today. I’m curious as to how they’ll turn out (stay tuned…)

I’d better catch some zzzs. It’s been a long week and it’s only Wednesday.

I’m a teacher (week 2)!

Hey everyone!

I apologize for keeping you in the dark this week – it’s been hectic!

My classes improved drastically and thankfully I wasn’t pulling my hair out over planning every minute of every lesson.

I taught just about every aspect of the language this week, from grammar and vocab to reading, writing, interviewing, complaints and so much more!

I think the most hilarious lesson was related to the topic of dating (from the textbook, not my own choice!) but to my surprise, the students loved it! I printed out a template of a dating profile and asked them to write one for the person sat next to them – it was brilliant and everyone got so involved!

Today, I allowed one of the younger students in my Elementary class to ‘be the teacher’ for two minutes. He quickly realized it wasn’t that easy, but we all enjoyed this brief switch in authority. It was hilarious and definitely sparked some motivation which carried on throughout the entire lesson.

In my ‘optional’ speaking lesson (the students pay to take an extra class over the lunch period) we have been covering the topic of health and fitness this week, and today I had them work in groups to discuss how alcohol, smoking, stress and sleep can affect our health. I can’t believe how well they prepared for a short presentation and everyone put in so much effort. I felt pleased with myself.

What have you guys been teaching this week?
Any advice for a newbie?

Education

I’m an English teacher!

It’s official.

I got offered a 4-week temporary teaching contract at the sister school  of where I did my CELTA!

My first day was full of nerves from the minute I woke up, which I tried to calm down with avocado on toast and a berry smoothie. Then a coffee. Then a massive salad box. I’m not sure why I was so nervous. I don’t understand my own nerves most of the time.

Both classes (one elementary, one intermediate) were full of lovely students and that made the afternoon much more enjoyable! We covered living abroad, living in the UK, emotions and suggestions.

Hopefully the students found their lessons interesting, I feel that I’m pretty good at reading people in terms of whether they’re bored or not… and tried to keep the lessons flowing. Fingers crossed it went well for them!

I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to gaining some more self-confidence so I can stop worrying so much.

Tomorrow I’ll be teaching three lessons… I’m just so excited to get into the swing of things and really find my feet!

I think I’m going to enjoy being a teacher – bring it on! 🙂

En route to work!
